I was just reminded that we haven’t spoken about bedroom design rules in a long time. That’s going to change right now!
If you’ve been following us for a while, then you know how I think that your bedroom is the most important space in your home. When it comes to furnishing your home, bedroom design rules are pretty much the same as any other room. Except for 1 or 2 that are specific to bedrooms.

1. Start with Function
First place to start is to think about how you will be using the room. Sleeping in there is a given. But what else are you going to be doing in your bedroom?
Is it a place where you will read a book? Or where you will relax at the end of the day with a glass of wine? Do you need storage?
Think through how you want your room to function and what that means in terms of the furniture pieces you’ll need for the space.

2. Choose a Colour Palette
Sometimes I think we sound like a broken record. We repeat this step over and over again. That’s because it’s important to do this step. I also know this might feel overwhelming. The thing is it doesn’t have to. We got you.
Trick to choosing a colour palette is to find some inspiration. Is there a bedroom on Pinterest or Instagram that can inspire you in terms of what colours you want to have in your room? Is there a specific design style like Coastal that would lead you to a colour palette?

3. Find a Focal Point
A couple of weeks ago we did a post on our blog about focal points for a Living Room. Similarly, you need to create a focal point for your bedroom.
In a bedroom, this focal point will be the bed and the wall where you’ll place the bed on. I know you are going to appreciate an easy bedroom design rule like this!
Decorating the wall where the bed is on, is one of those bedroom design rules you shouldn’t ignore. We love using wallpaper or paint to create a lot of interest on this feature wall.
Choose some beautiful nightstands to compliment the bed as well. Once you style your bed with throw pillows and your nightstands with some lighting, it’s going to look ahh-mazing!

4. Stick to Your Style
One of the things I notice every now and then is homeowners who fall in love with a specific bedroom on Pinterest or on Insta and try to create that exact look in their room. Except the rest of their home is a whole different design style.
Try to stick with a consistent design style throughout your home, just like you would have a consistent colour palette through your home.

6. Get Your Scale Right
Once you know what pieces of furniture you need and you have a handle on your style, then it’s time to look for furniture. If you’re on a budget, you’ll need to have a sense for how much to spend as a whole and know where you want to splurge and where you’ll be saving.
When you’re shopping for furniture, pay attention to the size and scale of the furniture. Think about potential layouts for your room and what pieces will fit in the space.
Scale is often difficult to get right unless you have the eye to be able to figure it out. Before you buy that King size bed, make sure it works from a scale perspective in your room. Let your bedroom have some flow and breathing room.

7. Don’t ignore Lighting
Lighting is perhaps one of the most important bedroom design rules. At least we think it should be!
If you know us, then you know that we’ve declared a war against the boob light. Lots of people leave these builder grade overhead lights in their rooms. Don’t do it! A beautiful chandelier or even an inexpensive flush mount light can replace the boring boob light.
Be thoughtful about the lighting on the nightstands as well. Can you replace the good old table lamp with wall sconces? How about pendants hanging from the ceiling?
Personally, I love having a beautiful, elegant table lamp on my bedside table but we’ve designed spaces for clients that don’t always include lamps on the nightstand. And they look gorgeous.
You want every piece of furniture and decor in your space to tell a story about who you are. These bedroom design rules are just some pointers to make you think and choose how to decorate your bedroom deliberately to create a space that becomes a retreat for you.
