Move over man-cave designs, it’s time for the she-shed design to shine!
We’ve all heard of Man-Caves before. You know that basement room, garage or shed that’s decked out in beer signs, football jerseys and probably some old leather recliners?
That space designed for men to kick-back and relax, in their own private area? Well, why don’t us ladies have the same thing?
Don’t get me wrong, I love a cold beer and watching my favourite sporting event, but I kind of need a space that’s a bit more… sophisticated. A space I can escape to when I need some time alone or some time with friends… A she-shed if you will!
What is a She-Shed?
You might have heard this term before, she-shed. But what does it mean?
And how do we get one?
A she-shed is basically the equivalent to a Man-Cave.
You know, minus the really old leather chairs and dart board on the wall. It’s essentially a place that is curated for someone to relax in, and have some time alone.
This space doesn’t necessarily have to be a shed or garage, it can even be a small space in your home that you want to personalise and transform into an escape of sorts.

So let’s get to it… how do we design a small space that is curated perfectly for ourselves to relax or entertain in?
First, let’s discuss the endless possibilities for the space.
Design with Function in Mind
She-sheds can function in just about any way you want them to, but before designing your space it’s important to understand what you would like to use it for. Perhaps, it’s a tiny yoga studio, or a place you want to read and take naps in.
Maybe it’s a mini bar for you to chat with your friends over a cocktail. If you have a hobby like playing an instrument or doing crafts, a she-shed could be the perfect place to do so.
Like I said earlier, the possibilities are practically endless.
After understanding how you want your space to function, it’s time to start creating your she-shed design plan.
Choose a Colour Palette
Choosing a paint colour for the walls is a great place to start, and an amazing way to customize the area.
If you’re using your she-shed for meditating, napping, reading or practically anything that involves relaxation you’ll want to stick with a calming colour, like a creamy neutral, light blue or grey.
If you’re using your space for a fun place to hang out with friends or jam out on your guitar, then maybe you’ll want to go with a more vibrant, bold colour.
Think about how you want the space to feel, colour can do an impeccable job at creating a mood. Choose about 2-3 additional colours for furniture and accessories in your space.
After picking your perfect colour palette for your she-shed, it’s time to start thinking about what furniture you need in your space in order for it to function correctly.
Figure Out Your Furniture
Now remember, your she-shed space is most likely small, so it’s imperative to measure and understand how much room you have to work with.
After doing this, make a wish-list of the main things you need for your space to be perfect.
If you’re using your space for a hobby, you may need a desk and a chair.
Alternatively, if your space is for entertaining you’ll want a small fridge, chairs or a tiny sofa!
Or mabye your space is for reading and relaxing and that means you’ll need an ultra comfy lounger or day bed.

Think Through Your Lighting
Don’t forget about lighting. Lighting will also be very important to set the mood in your space and have it function the way you wish.
If you are planning to do tasks in your she-shed you will need a good source of direct lighting to ensure you can see properly.
If your space is made to be fun and entertaining, you may wish to opt for mood lighting, like a funky neon sign or a cool floor lamp.
Bring in the Accessories
Now for the fun part, your accessories!
It’s time to think about how you are going to make your she-shed design special and personalize it just for you! This is a space you want to escape to, so think about what makes you happy and what you want to be surrounded by.
If you’re creating a place to relax in, you’ll want some beautiful art that makes you feel calm and content.
If you need a workout space, you’ll probably want to invest in a large, full length mirror so you can ensure your form is just right!
Other decor items you may want to include could be floor plants, a nice area rug, throw pillows, books, knick-knacks and practically anything that makes you happy and matches your theme!
