3 Tips to Designing the Perfect Reading Nook

Nov 11, 2023 | Design 101, Tips & Tricks, Wellbeing

There’s nothing I love more than curling up by a window with a good book and a blanket. A cup of hot chocolate or my Mom’s Sri Lankan milk tea helps too. It’s been so long since I’ve had a chance to indulge in this favorite pastime of mine! These days my love for fiction has been replaced by books on various business related topics.

If you’re a bookworm like me, then you’re probably dreaming of creating the perfect reading nook for yourself too. If you’ve got a corner in your living room, bedroom or home office that is currently being ignored, a reading nook is a perfect way to actually make use of that space.

A reading nook is not just a physical space; it’s a state of mind, a place where the outside noise fades away, and the magic of storytelling takes center stage.

From finding the perfect location that bathes your nook in natural light to selecting the coziest seating options that invite you to sink in and stay awhile – we’re leaving no page unturned. If you’re a book lover, you gotta love a pun!

But this isn’t just about functionality; it’s about infusing your personality into the space, making it uniquely yours.

Choosing the Right Location

Creating the ideal reading nook begins with selecting the right location, and what better way to start than by harnessing the power of natural light?

We often talk about the importance of natural light in interior design. In this case, not only does natural light elevate the ambiance, but it also reduces eye strain, creating a reading experience that’s as refreshing as it is enjoyable.

Your reading nook should be your haven of tranquility, a retreat from the cacophony of daily life. Opt for a space that offers seclusion and shields you from unnecessary noise. For example, a busy kitchen that is usually a hub of activity would be the wrong place for a calm, relaxing reading nook.

Whether it’s a corner of your living room, a window seat with a view, or a snug alcove in your bedroom, prioritize peace. Consider adding sound-absorbing elements like plush rugs or curtains to create an oasis of calm where you can dive into your book without any distractions.

As with any other space in your home, your reading nook should seamlessly blend with the overall aesthetic of your home. Think of it as a curated extension of your style. Choose furniture and accessories that harmonize with the surrounding space, ensuring that your nook is a natural, inviting extension of your home’s personality.

Essential Elements for a Reading Nook

Let’s move on to the part you really want to know. What are the essential pieces that will help you create the perfect reading nook?

Seating

First, you need comfortable seating. But it’s more than seating. I personally need some way to get my feet up too. I’m big on chaise lounges or a chair with a pouf or an ottoman for this function. Remember, you want to be comfortable if you’re going to lose yourself in a book for hours.

In my view, coziness of the space is a key ingredient in making it the perfect reading nook. I mean perfection requires a little more than just a reading nook with a chair and light, right? For me that means cushions, throws and curtains.

Layering these soft elements not only adds a touch of luxury but it will also make your reading nook irresistible. Experiment with different textures and patterns to infuse a personalized touch and, of course, these items will help you create a visual feast for your eyes.

Lighting

Lighting sets the mood for any space, and your reading nook is no exception. If your nook is blessed with ample natural light during the day, celebrate it! Position your chair near a window to bask in the glow of sunlight. Natural light makes you look radiant but that’s not all. It will do the same for your space.

For nighttime reading adventures, invest in soft, adjustable artificial lighting. Consider floor or table lamps with warm-toned bulbs to create a cozy ambiance that encourages relaxation. I love a sleek floor lamp with an adjustable arm that will help me direct the light to where I need it to.

Storage

While I kinda love the look of a stack of books next to the chair in a reading nook (it’s kinda romantic, no?), I think over time that would drive me nuts and the stack will start to grow. So, it’s important to have some sort of storage for books as well.

If you have the space, install bookshelves or bookcases within arm’s reach, ensuring your literary treasures are just a stretch away. Consider floating shelves for a minimalist look or go for floor-to-ceiling bookcases for a dramatic, immersive effect.

If you don’t have the space for a bookcase, consider incorporating stylish storage baskets or bins. These are perfect for stashing away magazines, extra throws, or any other essentials. If you want this space to feel calm, it’s important that you have a plan for how to keep it clutter-free.

Making it Even More Functional

When I design a space, I usually have a small, stylish side table beside almost every chair. I like this for a reading nook as well. It’s perfect for putting down your drink or a small plate of snacks. Remember, we want hours of reading time and that means snacks!

I don’t know if you know this but I used to work for Deloitte. One thing I loved about my experience at Deloitte is that they have this Leadership Development Center and it’s a bit like Disneyland for adults. And at this Center, I loved that they had snacks everywhere!

Okay, so maybe I’m easy to please but wouldn’t it be awesome if you could have a little cabinet where you could store things like your favorite snacks and maybe even have a little beverage fridge close to your reading nook? This might be a bit of a stretch but if you got the room, I love this idea and had to throw it out there.

Do you journal? Because a reading nook is a perfect place for getting some journaling done. So why not invest in a stylish lap desk for whenever you feel like jotting down some notes or writing down a favorite quote.

Your reading nook is more than just a physical space; it’s a reflection of your tastes, a haven for your literary adventures, and a sanctuary for moments of blissful solitude.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to creating the perfect reading nook. Your ideal space is a canvas awaiting your personal touch, a blend of functionality and aesthetics tailored to your preferences.

From the careful selection of seating and lighting to the inclusion of personal touches that make the space uniquely yours, every decision adds layers to the reading haven you’re creating.

Whether you’re working with a spacious corner or a cozy alcove, the key is to infuse your reading nook with elements that bring joy and tranquility. I hope you’ll soon get to revel in the joy of escaping into a good book, surrounded by the curated comfort of your own literary sanctuary.
