To be honest, this year’s trends look a lot like last year’s to me. And that’s a good thing in my mind. I like trends that tend to be long lasting because very often the kind of investments we make in our homes are big – from cost, time and effort perspectives, right? So if a trend lasts long, in my books that means that your investment has legs.

Living Room Decor Trend #1: Warm Neutrals

Beige is making a comeback in 2024 and I’m here for it!

I feel like warm neutrals were everywhere in design in 2023. Actually come to think of it, I think this trend made it to our list back in 2022. This is a living room decor trend that we will continue to see for much of 2024. Think hues that remind you of a tranquil desert at dusk, a cozy cashmere throw, or the gentle warmth of a morning latte. I’m talking beiges, caramels and all sorts of browns, and especially chocolate brown!

This color palette is all about creating a serene sanctuary that not only looks effortlessly chic but also feels like a warm embrace at the end of a demanding day. These colors are not just shades; they are experiences, evoking a sense of calm and grounding in your living space. Definitely a far cry from the stark, cold palettes that have dominated interiors in the past.

Incorporating warm neutrals into your living room is both an art and a science. It’s about choosing the right balance of shades like oatmeal, beige, soft grays, and muted terra cottas, which can add depth and warmth without overwhelming the senses. The beauty of these hues lies in their versatility. They provide a sophisticated backdrop that allows your personal style to shine.

To truly embrace this trend, think of textures as your ally. Layering different materials like soft wool throws, linen cushions, and sleek wood finishes can add a tactile dimension to your space. This isn’t just about visual appeal. It’s about creating a living room that invites you to unwind, reflect, and recharge.

Living Room Decor Trend #2: Wall Murals

The wall mural trend is new to our list of living room decor trends but this is something we’ve been doing for our clients for a few years now. It’s just that we found ourselves making recommendations for wall murals A LOT in the last couple of years and expect this trend to continue in 2024. I also suspect that this is an extension of the popularity of gorgeous, graphic wallpaper we’ve seen in living room decor in the last few years.

Remember back when people had wall murals of a beach or a tropical scene in their basement. This isn’t that! A wall mural in 2024 isn’t just a decorative element; it’s a statement piece that reflects your unique personality and sophisticated taste. And I mean SO-PHIS-TICATED.

Whether it’s a serene landscape, an abstract geometric pattern, or a delicate floral design, a mural adds a layer of unparalleled uniqueness to your living room.

But how do you pick the right mural for your space?

It’s about finding that perfect intersection between your personal style and the ambiance you want to create. As a connoisseur of fine aesthetics, imagine a mural that captivates but doesn’t overpower, one that speaks to you and resonates with the overall look and feel of your home.

It’s not just about what’s trendy; it’s about what feels right for you.

This trend is really about creating harmony – the mural should be a part of your room, not apart from it. It should shine without overwhelming the space.

In fact, a wall mural can be the perfect way to create a focal point in your living room

Living Room Decor Trend #3: Maximalism

Gone are the days of minimalist, boring spaces! As someone who loves color and personality, I’ve been happy that this trend we predicted for 2023 continues strong into the new year.

Maximalism is a celebration of abundance and eclecticism. This living room decor trend is an exciting playground for you if you have sophisticated taste and a bold personality. Yep, it’s definitely a ‘more is more’ kind of vibe going into 2024.

Maximalism is a trend that encourages you to tell your story in a bold and unapologetic way. It’s about layering patterns, textures, and colors to create a space that is rich in visual interest and personality.

Think of it as curating a gallery of your life experiences and aesthetic preferences. From exotic prints to plush fabrics, from vibrant artworks to an array of collectibles, each element in a maximalist living room adds a chapter to your unique narrative.

The key to mastering Maximalism lies in intentional curation.

The goal is not to create chaos but to weave a coherent and harmonious story. It’s about finding a balance where each piece has a purpose and a place, ensuring that your living room feels eclectic but not cluttered.

Color also plays a pivotal role in this trend. Bold, vibrant hues (also a 2023 trend we predicted and obviously continuing into 2024) set against a backdrop of more understated tones create an interesting and dynamic yet balanced look.

The interplay of different textures and materials will add depth and interest, inviting the eye to wander and explore. This is exactly what you want good design to do.

Furniture and decor in a maximalist living room are not there just to be functional. They are conversation starters. Statement pieces, if you will.

Each piece should reflect your taste and personality, whether it’s a vintage armchair, a modern sculpture, or a quirky lamp. In Maximalism, each item is like a piece of a puzzle that completes the picture of who you are.

Living Room Decor Trend #4: Quiet Luxury

I feel like we’ve been hearing about Quiet Luxury on how we dress for at least a year or more now. Like all things in fashion, it’s just a matter of time before the trend trickles into interior design.

This is where luxury is not about ostentation but about the understated, the refined, and the meticulously crafted. Think of Quiet Luxury as the embodiment of sophistication that whispers rather than shouts.

It’s an ode to subtlety and craftsmanship. It’s about choosing pieces that are timeless in their design and impeccable in their quality.

Think of materials that age gracefully – rich woods, supple leathers, and natural stones.

These elements aren’t just parts of your decor; they are investments in your living space, reflecting a sense of permanence and timeless elegance.

In a Quiet Luxury living room, every element is chosen for its ability to convey a sense of exclusivity and comfort without being overly extravagant. The color palette is typically muted, with an emphasis on soft, neutral tones that create a calming and harmonious atmosphere. These are spaces where the mind can relax and the spirit can rejuvenate.

The art of Quiet Luxury lies in the details. It’s the hand-stitched throw pillow, the custom-made side table, the artisan-crafted vase. These pieces don’t compete for attention; rather, they complement each other, creating a cohesive and serene environment. As someone who appreciates the finer things in life, I’m sure you recognize the value in these nuances.

The layout and flow of a Quiet Luxury living room are just as important as the pieces within it. The space should be uncluttered, with each piece given room to breathe and be appreciated. The arrangement is thoughtful and intentional, creating an environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Ahh…just talking about this living room decor trend makes me feel so relaxed and luxurious.

Living Room Decor Trend #5: Outside In

This is definitely another longer term trend we are seeing. We first called out this trend back in 2021 and it has continued to make our list every year since then. This trend is a perfect match for you, if you understand that true luxury is often found in the organic beauty and in the tranquility of nature.

I like to talk about how our environment, especially our home, has an impact on how we feel. This trend really hits at the heart of that concept. If you’re into wellness concepts like grounding and how taking a walk in nature is good for your physical and mental health, you undoubtedly already understand how important this trend is for all of us.

Bringing the Outdoors In is all about creating a seamless connection between your indoor living space and the natural world. It’s an invitation to infuse your home with elements that remind you of the serenity and the vitality you find in nature. Imagine lush green plants, natural wood textures, stone accents, and a palette inspired by the great outdoors.

This trend is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a living space that nourishes your soul and brings a sense of balance and calm to your busy life.

Incorporating this trend into your living room can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. It could be the inclusion of large, leafy plants that add a vibrant touch of green, or the use of natural materials like bamboo, wicker, or stone to bring an earthy feel to the room.

Large windows that allow natural light to flood the space and offer views of the outdoors can help further blur the lines between inside and out.

A color palette is another way to bring inspiration from nature into your living room. Soft greens, browns, blues, and earthy neutrals, all work together to create a space that feels grounded and peaceful. These colors have a timeless quality and are known for their ability to evoke a sense of tranquility.

The beauty of the Outdoors In trend lies in its ability to transform your living room into a space that feels like a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. It’s about creating an environment where you can breathe, relax, and reconnect with nature.
