Psst…wanna know a secret? Today, we’re unraveling the secrets behind decorating with soft furnishings—the hidden gems of interior design that hold the power to transform your living spaces into inviting sanctuaries.

You see, soft furnishings are not merely decorative elements; they are the unsung heroes that infuse your home with warmth, character, and undeniable style. The Versatility of Soft Furnishings

So what exactly do we mean by soft furnishings? Think of it as another way to refer to textiles used in your home.

Soft furnishings can elevate your space in ways you might not have imagined. They are not only the building blocks of comfort and aesthetics in any room, but also helps you craft a truly captivating ambiance. Let’s take a closer look at some examples.

Fabrics for Upholstery and Drapery

Soft, inviting fabrics can turn a plain piece of furniture into a luxurious centerpiece. Drapes and curtains not only frame your windows but also provide an opportunity to introduce color, pattern, and texture to your decor.

I often see homeowners who choose to forgo drapes or curtains when they have blinds. This is a missed opportunity to elevate the look and feel of your home, in my view.

One of my personal design tricks is to buy a piece of furniture second hand or at a lower price point if it has good bones and then to have it upholstered in a beautiful, luxurious fabric. It instantly elevates the look of that piece and the whole room.

These soft furnishings add elegance and sophistication to your living room or bedroom. They offer visual interest, soften harsh lines, and provide an opportunity to express your personal style. And we are big on putting your personal style in your home!

Rugs for Defining Spaces

Last week, we talked about how rugs help define areas within open-concept spaces, making them feel more intimate. They also introduce color, texture, and warmth to your floors, which can be particularly comforting during colder months.

I was at my physiotherapist earlier this week and the office manager there, Sheila, asked me “Do we really need rugs in a room?”. This is a question I get often and usually from folks who moved to Canada or the US from somewhere warm.

It makes sense that if you lived in a warmer country that you might not have used rugs. A well-chosen area rug doesn’t just anchor a room; it unifies your design scheme and adds warmth underfoot. It’s an indispensable tool for creating cozy, well-defined spaces within larger rooms. It’s also a great way to muffle and manage sound in a room.

So…umm, yes. You need rugs.

Cushions and Throws

I like to say no room is finished until you’ve fluffed some throw pillows. These small yet mighty accent pieces introduce comfort and style effortlessly. Cushions can add a pop of color or pattern to a sofa, while throws invite you to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea, making any seating area feel cozier.

Cushions and throws are like the jewelry of your decor. Just like your jewelry brings that finishing touch to your outfit, so do the cushions and throws. They accentuate your furniture, infuse color and texture, and are easily interchangeable to suit your evolving design preferences.

What I love even more about cushions and throws is that they can be such a great cost effective way to add a ton of style.

Now do you see how soft furnishings are the secret ingredients to creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere in your home? They add layers of softness, style, and comfort, turning your space into a haven that beckons you to relax and unwind.

Choosing the Perfect Soft Furnishings

Selecting the right soft furnishings is a nuanced art that can truly make or break your interior design. To harness the full potential of these magical elements, you’ll want to keep in mind a few things when you’re making your choices.

Soft furnishings are your canvas for adding splashes of color and pattern to your space. Consider the existing color scheme in your room and choose textiles that complement or contrast with it. Bold patterns can add excitement, while subtle ones can create a sense of calm.

The texture of your soft furnishings can be a tactile delight. Think about how different materials feel against your skin and how they harmonize with the overall design. Plush velvets, silky satins, and natural fibers like cotton or linen all bring their own unique textures to the party.

Practicality matters too, right? Think about the durability of your textiles, especially in high-traffic areas or homes with pets and children. Some materials may require more maintenance than others, so think about your lifestyle when making these choices.

Coordinating Your Soft Furnishings

Now that you know how to choose your textiles, what’s next? You need to learn how to coordinate them in your space to create that elevated look you’re after.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match textiles with different colors and patterns. Experiment with complementary or contrasting hues to create a visually stimulating and balanced look. For instance, pairing a solid-colored sofa with patterned cushions can bring depth and interest to your seating area.

Personally, I like to have two layers of cushions on a sofa. I almost always do one layer of solid and one layer of pattern, depending on the look I’m after.

Texture plays a pivotal role in making a room feel layered and inviting. Mix textiles with varying textures, such as a chunky knit throw on a smooth leather chair or a shaggy rug beneath a sleek coffee table. This interplay of textures adds depth and tactile appeal.

While aesthetics are vital, don’t forget about functionality. I can’t stress this enough. Function first, always. Soft furnishings should not only look good but also serve their intended purpose. Make sure that your choices align with the practical needs of your space. For instance, go for durable, stain-resistant fabrics in high-traffic areas.

Soft Furnishings for Different Rooms

Soft furnishings can be like the chameleons in the world of interior design, adapting seamlessly to different rooms in your home. Let’s take a closer look at how you can harness their potential to create distinctive and inviting spaces throughout your home.

In The Living Room: Cozy Elegance

The living room is often the heart of the home, where family and guests gather to relax and converse. Textiles and fabrics most definitely play a pivotal role here in adding both style and comfort.

  • Sofas and Chairs: Upholstered furniture serves as the focal point. Choose luxurious fabrics like velvet or soft leather for a touch of opulence.
  • Cushions and Throws: Add personality with an array of cushions in various sizes and textures. Draping a throw over the back of a sofa not only looks inviting but also provides warmth on chilly evenings.
  • Rugs: A well-placed rug grounds the seating area, defining the space and providing a soft underfoot experience.

In The Bedroom: Tranquil Retreat

I’m fond of saying that your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place where you can unwind and rejuvenate. Fabrics in the bedroom create an atmosphere of comfort and serenity.

  • Bedding: High-quality bedding in soft materials like cotton or linen promotes restful sleep. Experiment with colors and patterns to suit your personal style.
  • Cushions and Throws: Scatter cushions on your bed to introduce layers of texture and color. A throw blanket at the foot of the bed adds an extra touch of luxury.
  • Curtains: Soft, blackout curtains can enhance your sleep quality by keeping out unwanted light and noise.

In The Kitchen and Dining Area: Practical Elegance

Textiles in the kitchen and dining area serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, making mealtime a fun and delightful experience.

  • Dining Chairs: Upholstered dining chairs provide comfort during long meals and contribute to an inviting dining space.
  • Kitchen Nooks: Soften hard kitchen benches with seat cushions. These not only add comfort but also introduce a pop of color.
  • Table Linens: Soft tablecloths or runners can add elegance to your dining table, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for shared meals.

In The Bathroom: Spa-Like Luxury

Don’t forget the bathroom. Soft furnishings have their place in helping you create a spa-like retreat in your bathroom.

  • Towels: Plush, absorbent towels in soothing colors elevate your daily routine. Consider a soft bath mat for extra comfort.
  • Shower Curtains: Opt for fabric shower curtains for a touch of luxury and warmth in the bathroom.

In every room in your home, textiles and fabrics have a pivotal role to play in shaping the atmosphere and functionality. Their adaptability allows you to not only express your personal style but also make each space inviting and comfortable.

Caring for Your Soft Furnishings

Your textiles and fabrics not only add beauty and comfort to your home but also require some tender loving care to keep them looking their best. Proper maintenance is the key to preserving the longevity and appeal of these valuable elements of your decor.

Cleaning Soft Furnishings

Dust and vacuum soft furnishings regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt and debris. This simple step can extend the lifespan of your cushions, rugs, and curtains.

Address spills and stains promptly. Blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the spill as possible. Be cautious when using cleaning agents, as some fabrics may require special care.

Washing Soft Furnishing Items

Cushion Covers and Throws: Check the care labels on these items to determine if they are machine washable. If they are, follow the recommended washing instructions. For delicate fabrics or those with intricate embellishments, consider professional cleaning.

Rugs: Depending on the size and material, rugs may need professional cleaning. Consult with a rug cleaning specialist for guidance on maintaining your specific rug type.

Curtains: Many curtains are machine washable, but some may require dry cleaning. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and consider vacuuming them periodically to remove dust.

Protecting Soft Furnishings from Sun and Moisture

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and weaken fabrics. Consider using UV-resistant window treatments or periodically rotating your textiles to ensure even exposure.

Moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth. Ensure that rooms are adequately ventilated, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. Use dehumidifiers in damp areas if necessary.

By caring for your fabrics with diligence and attention to detail, you can extend their life, ensuring that they continue to enhance your home’s beauty and comfort for years to come.

And when you invest in pieces for your home like we often suggest, you’ll want to take the appropriate steps to ensure their longevity. And bonus, proper maintenance not only preserves their appearance but also contributes to a healthier and more inviting living environment.
