A few weeks ago, I did my first ever Steal the Style session. Steal the Style is a bi-weekly live event that I’m hosting online where I deconstruct a beautifully designed space and put it back together to show how you too can create a designer look at home.
Anyway, for our first session, I chose a beautifully designed home office by Studio McGee. We often see clients pinning Studio McGee in their inspiration boards when they work with us and Shea McGee is an inspiration. It was an honour to use a design by Studio McGee in our inaugural session for Steal the Style.
What really made this home office shine was this gorgeous built-in that served as the focal point for this room. A built-in by itself can be a great focal point but this thing was colour drenched in a lush moss green that radiated natural elegance and styled to perfection. It was as if this single element whispered, ‘This is where elegance meets ambition,’ inviting you to envision a space where every detail is designed to create success.
In interior design, a focal point isn’t just a decorative term or an item—it is what tells the story of the room. It sets the mood, guides your gaze, and creates a harmonious flow throughout the space. Whether it’s a bold accent wall, an intriguing piece of art, or a uniquely designed piece of furniture, a focal point can instantly transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary.
In this post, we’ll uncover a designer trick that harnesses the power of focal points to enhance any room effortlessly. You’ll discover practical tips to assess your space, choose that one standout element, and accentuate it so skillfully that your room tells its own beautiful story.
So, pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and join me on this journey of transforming everyday spaces into places of wonder.

Understanding Room Focal Points
In interior design, a focal point is that one standout element in a space which naturally draws your eye and sets the tone for the entire space. It might be a bold accent wall, a striking piece of art, or even an intricately designed built-in like we talked about earlier.
Think of it as the heart of the room—it’s where style, personality, and function come together to create an inviting ambiance or feel.
If you were to walk into a room and instantly notice a beautifully designed feature that makes you go “wow”, that’s the power of a focal point. It doesn’t just capture attention; it also creates a clear visual hierarchy in interior design.
Everything else in the space plays a supporting role, enhancing the overall balance and flow. When used effectively, a focal point guides you through the room, making sure that every element, from complementary decor to carefully chosen lighting, works together in harmony.
It’s the thing that holds everything else together, if you will. A good focal point helps guide your eye through the room and makes the room feel cohesive and inviting.

The Science Behind Focal Points
When it comes to creating a stunning room focal point, there’s more than just good taste at work—it’s a blend of art and science. Let me break down how elements like visual hierarchy, color theory, and lighting come together to form the secret behind a perfect interior design focal point.
Visual Hierarchy and Flow
Think of your space as a well-composed painting. A strong focal point establishes a clear visual hierarchy, guiding your eyes naturally from one element to the next. By placing a statement piece—whether it’s a vibrant accent wall or an eye-catching sculpture—in a strategic spot, you create an organized flow that invites you to explore the room. This isn’t just a random placement; it’s a thoughtful designer trick that ensures every element in your space supports the central narrative.
The Role of Colour and Contrast
Colour isn’t just about making a room look pretty. It’s a powerful tool for shaping mood and drawing attention. When you select a bold hue for your focal point, like a rich olive or moss green on an accent wall, you’re tapping into the psychology of colour.
Contrast plays its part, too. For example, a vivid focal element set against a more subdued background makes the interior design focal point stand out brilliantly. This interplay of colours doesn’t just captivate the eye but also sets the stage for a harmonious design story.

Scale, Proportion, and Balance
A truly effective focal point respects the principles of scale and proportion. I talked a lot about scale and proportion in the last blog post.
The size of your chosen element should be just right—big enough to command attention, and balanced enough to complement the surrounding decor. This thoughtful approach prevents your focal point from overwhelming the space. And it creates a seamless flow that feels both intentional and inviting.
In essence, what I’m saying is that when you artfully balance a room focal point with complementary decor, it transforms your space into a cohesive, well-orchestrated design. And that is exactly what you’re after!
Enhancing with Lighting
Lighting is the often overlooked hero in making your focal point pop. For example, by using directional lighting for focal points, you can accentuate the textures, colors, and details of your standout piece.
Whether it’s natural light streaming in through a window or carefully placed spotlights, lighting plays a crucial role in creating drama and depth. It’s another key designer trick that elevates your interior design focal point from a mere element in the room to the true star of the room.
Okay, I know I got a little technical there and I hope I didn’t lose you! I love to geek out on how a lot of design is really based in science. And the science behind focal points is all about creating a balance—a careful dance of visual elements that not only grabs someone’s attention but also tells a story.

The Designer Trick: Creating an Instant Focal Point
Now that you know all the theory and science behind focal points, are you ready to learn how to put it all into action?
Creating an eye-catching room focal point is easier than you might think, and it all starts with a few well-planned steps. Let’s walk through the process together in a step-by-step guide that’s both practical and inspiring.
Step 1: Assess the Space
Before you jump in, take a moment to truly observe your room. Consider the natural light (where does it come from and what does it illuminate?, architectural features, and existing decor. Ask yourself:
- Where does my eye naturally go?
- What part of the room feels empty or underutilized?
This initial assessment helps you pinpoint the ideal spot for your interior design focal point. Whether it’s a blank wall waiting for an accent wall treatment or a niche that could be transformed with a striking piece of art, your goal is to find that space where your design trick can shine.

Step 2: Choose Your Element
Now comes the fun part! Let’s select the element that will become your focal point. Think about what speaks to you and complements your overall style:
- Bold Artwork or Statement Piece: A unique painting or a sculptural piece can serve as an instant magnet for attention.
- An Accent Wall: Consider using a rich, opulent hue—perhaps a beautiful earthy tone—to create a dramatic backdrop that pulls the room together.
- Exquisite Piece of Furniture: Choose a stunning piece of beautiful furniture—whether it’s a stylish armchair or a designer sofa—that serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose. This carefully selected piece can effortlessly anchor your space, emerging as the standout room focal point that elevates your overall interior design.
Choose an element that not only captures attention but also tells a story about your personality and taste. I often say that interior design is a series of intentional and informed decisions. This decision is your signature designer trick—a deliberate choice that transforms a plain space into something memorable.
Step 3: Enhance and Accentuate
With your focal point selected, it’s time to let it truly shine. The secret here is in the details:
- Use directional lighting for focal points to spotlight your chosen element. Whether it’s a well-placed spotlight or natural light streaming in through a window, lighting can dramatically elevate your interior design focal point.
- Keep surrounding elements minimal yet meaningful. Think of using subtle decor that enhances the visual impact without competing with your focal point. For example, if you’ve opted for a bold accent wall, choose furniture and accessories that complement its color or texture.
- Mix materials and finishes to add depth. A glossy finish against a matte background, or smooth surfaces paired with textured fabrics, can create a dynamic contrast that makes your focal point pop.

Step 4: Final Touches
The finishing touches are what tie the whole look together. Here’s how to wrap up your transformation:
- Balance is key. Add a few well-chosen accessories—like decorative cushions, a sleek vase, or even a carefully curated set of books—to balance the room. This keeps the focus on your main design trick without overwhelming the space.
- Infuse your unique style into the decor. A personal memento or an artisanal piece can add a layer of authenticity that transforms your focal point into a narrative of your home’s story.
- Step back and view your work from different angles. Sometimes a slight adjustment in lighting or the rearrangement of decor can enhance the overall impact even further.
By following these steps, you’re not just creating a room focal point—you’re crafting an experience. This designer trick is all about elevating everyday spaces with thoughtful choices that resonate with your style.
These steps will help you design a space that truly speaks to the heart of modern interior design. Enjoy the process and watch your room transform into a masterpiece of balance, beauty, and personal flair.
Remember, every element you choose plays a role in telling the story of your home. Whether you’re revamping your living area, reimagining your home office, or simply seeking a fresh perspective on interior design, creating a powerful interior design focal point is your secret to a room transformation that resonates with elegance and modern charm.
So, why not take these tips for a spin in your own space? Experiment with different textures, colors, and focal elements, and discover the joy of a well-orchestrated design that truly speaks to your style. Happy designing, and here’s to making every room a statement of your unique taste!
