Next up, let’s figure out your budget…

Okay, so this step is probably not the one that you’re most excited about. And it might feel a tad bit overwhelming. Hang in there with us and we’ll walk you through the baby steps to get you to a budget for your living room design ideas.

Having a budget just means you’re going to feel that much more confident when you start shopping for everything you need for your living room design–whether that is one piece of furniture or a full room of furniture.

To get started, think about how you plan to use your room. What type of furniture do you need in the living room? For example, are you going to use your living room to entertain or is it more like a family room where you’ll be watching TV and hanging out? Maybe it’s both and that’s totally okay.

Do you need a little workspace in this living room for when you work from home? How about a bar area for when you entertain? Or mabye a little reading nook to put your feet up and catch up on that stack of books you’ve got there.

Next, consider the space you have. Now that you know how you want to use your living room,  do you actually have the space to do all these things?

Now think through what types of furniture you need to for the living room to function the way you need it to. For example, do you need a sofa, a couple of accent chairs, a coffee table, a bar, a desk and office chair or is it that you need a sofa, an accent chair and a coffee table? What about a rug, side tables, lighting, drapery and accessories?

Make a list everything you need and research pricing in the design style(s) you like. Add it all up and that will give you a budget for furnishing your living room.

Having a budget will help keep the stress away as you get going on putting all those living roo design ideas you have into action.

Time for selecting a colour palette…

One of the biggest mistakes we see homeowners make is purchasing furniture they like wihtout having a cohesive palette in mind. This is how you end up with mishmash of different colours that don’t work together to elevate the look and feel in your living room.

Colour is one of those things in interior design that has a huge impact on how you feel. For example, blues make us feel calm when reds get us excited and yellow makes us feel happy.

Consider how you want to feel in your living room. Let that determine the main colour for the room. Next, choose a complimentary colour or two that would work with the main colour. Choose an accent colour that would make the other colours pop. Choose a white or a neutral colour to help balance.

Ideally a good colour palette will have 3-5 different colours. Draw from this colour palette for wall paint colours, furniture, rug, throw pillows, curtains, etc. you need for the living room.

When you’re on the hunt for living room design ideas, make sure you look into creating a colour palette that makes you feel amazing in your home.

Get the right flow for your living room…

Most homeowners find this next step the hardest–finding the right layout.

One of the most important pricinciples in interior design that you need to get right is the size and scale of furniture in proportion to the size of your living room. This goes hand in hand with getting the right layout.

Instead of pushing your furiture against the walls, float them in the middle of the room. You’ll make the best use of your space this way. Make sure there is about 30″-36″ around furniture for you to walk by.

Living rooms are usually where you entertain family and freinds, so you want to make sure that the room lends itself to great conversations.

Can you picture it now? You and your friends hanging out in your living room, talking about your latest trip, work project, promotion or whose kid is about to graduate high school, over a glass of cab sauvignon and the crostini you learned to make on that cooking class you took to Italy last year.

You will want to keep these conversation area to about 3′ – 10′ radius.

One of the best ways to figure out your flow is to draw yourself a floor plan. Measure your living room and plan how you will place furniture around the room to create the right flow that works for you.

We can’t think of a better living room design idea that to get the flow and the scale of your living room right.

Now, on to styling your living room…

This is the part of the design process, most folks leave off. We get it, it’s a lot of work to get to this point and adding the final touches always takes more time and money than you may have aniticipated. So it’s easy to leave this for another day, another time.

But here’s the thing. If you don’t do this part of the design process, all the work you did earlier will bear little fruit. Your living room will look unfinished. It won’t be the proud home you want to invite everyone over to. When you look at pictures from last Christimas, your attention will go to that bare wall or the coffee table that’s not styled.

Don’t worry. We got you.

Look at your living room walls and think about how to style them. Wallpaper, gallery walls, large scale art, shelves are just some of the ways we like to decorate walls.

Throw pillows are a great way to style your sofas and accent chairs. And don’t foget lighting and decor for the coffee table.

At Daakor, we think that every living room needs a plant or two but be sure to house it in a planter that works wiht the overall style of your living room decor.

And just like that, you have a well styled living room, you’d be proud to invite anyone over for some drinks and treats.
