Take Your Bed from Drab to Gorgeous with These Easy Tips

Do you find that you sleep better when you stay at a hotel? I know I do and I think it has a lot to do with how inviting the bed looks and you deserve to have the same at home.

Here are our ingredients to making your bed look and feel as inviting as a luxury hotel room.

Mattress

A great mattress is the foundation to creating a hotel look and feel in your own bedroom. If your mattress is more than 10 years old, it might be the right time to find a new one.

With a ton of options available via ‘bed-in-a-box’ options, it might not be as hard as you think.

Consider more than just price in your mattress decision. Look at how the mattress is made.

Is it memory foam, Innersprint, Latex or something else? Make sure you understand what each of these mean for you.

Also find the mattress that best suits your sleeping position. For example, if you’re a slide sleeper, you might find if a mattress is too hard or too soft, you end up building pressure around your neck and shoulders. This is not the best idea for great sleep.

Your height and weight should also be factors in your decision on a mattress.

For example, if you weigh more than 200 lbs, you might need to consider a firmer mattress that won’t cause too much sinkage and too little support.

Do your homework and read reviews because you make this important decision.

Sheets

If you’re used to buying the highest thread count and calling it a day, there’s definitely more to bedsheets than that, although I will admit, thread count is indeed very important.

Aim for sheets between 200-500 thread count. Anything higher lower might not be as comfy and anything higher is not noticeably better.

What material is the bed sheet made of?  100% cotton always works when choosing bed sheets but what’s also important is the type of cotton. Choose Egyptian or Pima for the most durable and softest of sheets.

If you don’t have the funds to buy expensive Egyptian cotton sheets, then spend your dollars on something like a cotton/polyester blend.

Pay attention to the size of the sheets as well to make sure that it will actually fit your mattress.

For example, thickness or depth varies from mattress to mattress, depending on it’s features, so your fitted sheets might not fit every mattress.

The biggest question I see homeowners struggling with is to decide what colour sheets to buy.

At Daakor, we almost always recommend white sheets unless it’s a kid’s bedroom. It has that luxurious feel of a hotel and it will coordinate perfectly with anything you can choose for your duvet cover or throw pillows.

Duvet or Comforter

Let’s start by talking about the difference between a duvet and comforter.

A duvet is typically white or cream in colour and is filled with natural or synthetic material.

A duvet should be used in conjunction with a duvet cover that you can remove and wash regularly.

Duvets come in different levels of fills that will indicate when they are best used. They range from lightweight options that are best for summer use to extra heavy versions that are ideal for keeping you cozy in Northern Canada. I’m kidding…maybe only half kidding. Ok, maybe even in Ontario on those extra cold days in the winter.

We love using duvets at Daakor because it gives you so many possibilities for duvet covers and decor options.

Comforter on the other hand is similar to a duvet but is usually filled with synthetic material and comes with a pattern already. Typically comforters are not used with a cover.

No one ever said you couldn’t put a duvet cover on a comforter. In fact, I’ve done it but what I don’t like about comforters is that sometimes I find that they get too hot.

The natural fibers in duvets generally help you stay cozy and warm without getting too hot.

Whether you choose a duvet or a comforter, choose one that has a reversible design. This will look better on your bed and give you the option of making a quick change to your bed’s decor without having to invest in something new.

Throw Pillows

Throw pillows on your bed is the easiest way to style your bed. The rules we articulated for styling a sofa with throw pillows also apply here.

Here are some examples of using throw pillows to style a bed.

How to style your bed

Throw Blanket

I always like to add a throw blanket into the mix when I’m styling a bed. Outside of it’s utilitarian nature, It helps create a bit of a contrast on the bed.

Hotels often use a runner to create a similar effect but I don’t find runners are a popular choice for a private home. However, I think if you have a plain duvet cover, adding a runner is an easy way to create a beautiful bed.

Layering it all together

Your sheets, duvet, duvet cover, throw pillows and a blanket, all together can create a beautiful bed by layering one on top of the others.
