Alright, it’s time we talk exteriors.
Anyone else guilty of taking their dog on a walk around the neighbourhood only to get a glimpse of what the neighbours have been doing with their landscaping, or to decide which house looks the best on the block? Yep, that’s me… I can’t help it.
So what is the first thing people notice when walking by your house or visiting? That’s right, it’s the front door. The entry into the rest of your home and essentially the piece that welcomes everyone in, including yourself.

A fresh coat of paint on your exterior front door can do an amazing job at making your home feel more inviting and really amping up the overall curb appeal.
But you don’t want just amazing, do you? What colour can you paint your front door to make it look superb and leave people walking by talking about it for the next few minutes?
If you live in Southern Ontario, have you ever been down to Niagara-on-the-Lake? Have you seen the house with the pink door? If you know, you know. I see people posing in front of this house for pictures all the time. Ahem…me included. I’m going to make that the post cover pic.
My favourite colour is turquoise. Is that even legal for a front door? Let me tell you, it is, and it could be just what your home is needing! So read on for a few of our favourite colour selections for front doors this season…

First, I want to begin with the classic colours that are sure to stand the test of time. These are perfect if you’re looking for something that will match your home through every season and blend well with natural surroundings. Don’t we all love a good classic?
Hues like brown or grey work really well as they match many exterior colours and also blend excellently with the outdoors. Neutral tones are known to connect us to nature and actually help bring stability, balance and nurture us as humans. C’mon doesn’t that sound amazing?
Classic colours for front doors can also include dark, navy blues and muted red tones, which also act as neutrals in this case. Here are some examples of classic exterior door colours that may be perfect for you!
We always suggest viewing samples on your actual door so you can see how they look in the sunlight and during different points in the day.

From L to R: Downpour Blue, Raisin Torte, Bear Creek, Deep Space, Black Magic. All by Benjamin Moore.
Now, if you’re looking for something a little more bright and unique, painting your front door is a great place to start. It’s a rather small project so don’t be afraid to have some fun and try something new. You can always paint it back to the original colour if you don’t like the new colour.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s anyone? Now, who doesn’t like the colour of that famous little blue Tiffany’s box. Imagine coming home each day and being greeted by a beautiful blue door. Instant smiles!
Blue is known to be a soothing and relaxing colour that also compliments the outdoors quite well. And as we all know there are about a gazillion shades to choose from, so go ahead and paint your front door your favourite shade of blue and you’ll never look back!

We are also really into buttery yellow shades for front doors. Yellow is a mood-booster, it’s energetic, fun and welcoming. So why not create that mood as soon as you walk into your front door? Yellow would pair excellently with outdoor plants, and it also goes really well with all sorts of trim colours.
Lastly, dark green has been on our radar for a while, and for good reasons. Dark green looks amazing amongst a natural landscape but still gives off a fun and playful vibe. It’s earthy and natural but still unique. Once again, you can play with the brightness of green until you find something that suits your style and the rest of your exterior.

From L to R: Hay Stack, Cat’s Eye, Caribbean Cool, Hot Lips, Coral Gables. All by Benjamin Moore.
As we always say, it is important to select a colour you are attracted to. One that genuinely makes you happy. When painting your front door, you can’t really go wrong, it’s all about knowing what kind of vibe you are aiming for, whether that be a neutral and classic grey or a bright and fun yellow.
Remember to try different samples against your actual door so you can see how the colours change throughout the day. Most importantly, have fun with it and don’t be afraid to try something new!
