Who are Daakorators?

Daakorators are what we call our interior design experts.  Our design team is made up of an in-house design team as well as freelance professionals that work with us to help create beautiful, inspiring spaces. 

What is Daakor's room design process?

The room design process begins when you create a design brief for your decorating project. The process ends when you receive your final design plan.

The room design process is made up of two phases.

In the first phase we give you up to 3 design concepts to choose from based on the information you shared in the design brief. Each of these designs will come from a different designer. Our goal of phase one is to match you with a designer who gets your style.

You move on to the next phase by choosing a style board you love. It may not be perfect just yet but you will work with your designer to refine this concept in phase two. When you choose a style board, you are really choosing the Daakorator you want to work with.

In the second phase of the process, you will work with your design expert to finalize the details of your room design.

At the end of this phase you receive your design plan. The design plan includes a style board that has been tweaked based on your feedback, a shopping list with links to buy everything you need for the room, a floor plan that tells you where to put everything and any special instructions from our expert to help you pull everything together perfectly.

What is a design brief?

A design brief is a questionnaire that you answer to start your room design process. When you click “Start a Project” or “Get Started” from anywhere on our site, you’ll start to create your design brief. 

Once you register and pay for your project, you’ll be able to finish your design brief with all the info we need to give you design concepts that you will love.

This questionnaire captures details such as what room you want to design, your budget and your style to help the Daakorators understand what you are looking for.

The more information you provide in the design brief, the more likely you are to receive a design you truly love!

What is a style board?

A style board is a single-page design concept that gives customers a feel for what their room could look like. It has a combination of the furniture, accessories, colours, etc. that will make up the room design being proposed by the Daakorator.

Style boards submitted during the design contest phase of the process are not complete. They give you a feel for what the room could look like and will be enough to help you make a decision for which Daakorator you will want to work with.

Once you choose a style board, you can work with your Daakorator to refine the style board. Your Daakorator will add any missing pieces to the board and finalize the look.

Style boards are the jumping off point for the final design plan.

How long does the room design process take?

It will take about 3 days or 72 hours for you to see your initial 2-3 design concepts. 

The entire process takes about 2-3 weeks from when you submit your design brief, depending on how quickly you’re able to choose a style board and give feedback for phase 2.

What is a design plan?

A design plan is what you will receive at the end of the design process. It will have everything you need to decorate your room.

The design plan includes the final style board, a shopping list that fits your budget, a floor plan and any special instructions from the Daakorator to help you put your room together.

What is the shopping list?

The shopping list is part of the final design plan. It has a list of items you will need to purchase to pull off your design.

The shopping list contains links to our online store where you can purchase the items you need. You are not obligated to buy anything from us. 

If you choose to purchase through us, we’ll work with all of the vendors behind the scenes to get your items and have all of your new furnishings delivered directly to you. 

What is a floor plan?

The floor plan is one of the deliverables in the final design plan. It is a picture of your room that shows where everything should be placed to create the look you are after.

What are the instructions you provide?

We recognize that our room design service is probably most attractive to customers that are DIY-ers.

So, we’ve asked our Daakorators to provide any special instructions as part of the final deliverable to give you some ideas on how you can add your own personal touch to the design of your room.

If you’re not happy with our service, we want to do everything to make it right. We appreciate that you chose us to help you design your home and we want to make sure we get it right.

How do I start a project?

Just click on any of the Get Started or Start a Project buttons on our website and you’ll be on your way.

How do I choose a Daakorator to work with?

You don’t actually have to choose Daakorators to start off your project. Our process will help you identify just the right person for your job!

We’ll assign 3 Daakorators from our roster based on the preferences you outline in your desing brief. They’ll each upload a style board to your project over the next 72 hours. 

After you have had a chance to review all of the style boards, you choose the Daakorator you want to work with by choosing one style board you absolutely love!

Our process lets you identify a Daakorator based on the design concept they propose for your room, and not based on a portfolio of projects they’ve done for someone else!

What do I get at the end of the design process?

At the end of the design process, you receive your final design plan.

Final design plan is made up of three parts. You will receive a style board that will give you a feel for what your room will look like, a shopping list that fits your budget with links to the items you will need to purchase, a floor plan that tells you where everything goes. If we recommended any DIY projects for you then you’ll receive some additional instructions from your Daakorator too.

How many style boards or design concepts will I get to choose from?

You’ll get up to 3 style boards to choose from. Each style board is a unique design concept, customized just for you.

How will I communicate with my Daakorator?

You will communicate with your Daakorator using the messaging functionality on our platform. 

Click on the Messages tab on your project to send a direct message to your Daakorator. 

How do I choose a style board?

You’ll see a button next to each style borad saying ‘Work with this Daakorator’. Click on the button and you’ll be on your way to the next phase of the process. 

What happens after I choose a style board?

After you have chosen your style board, you can send a message to your Daakorator to let them know what you want to see in your final design concept.

Start the conversation by discussing any tweaks that you want to see to your style board and work from there.

If you chose our Signature service, you’ll get two revisions to get to your final design. 

Once you’ve nailed down your room design, your Daakorator will create a floor plan and build out other views of the room. They will also share your shopping list with you.

How long do I have to choose a style board?

We don’t want to rush you, so take a couple of days but don’t wait too long to choose a style board. 

How long will it take to get the final design plan?

From the initial starting point, you’re probably looking at about 2-3 weeks if you’re timely in choosing a style board and giving feedback to your Daakorator. 

Where do you get the furniture and accessories in the style boards from?

We shop at many of the same vendors you do and we have access to some exlusive trade-only vendors as well. 

Do you mark-up furniture you sell?

We don’t markup furniture that we get from retail vendors that you have access to. So, you’re not going to pay more than what you would if you went directly to one of these stores. 

For trade-only vendors, we follow the guidance from the manufacturer on pricing. Often our pricing will be lower than most retailers for the same product when you purchase all of your furnishings for a room with us. 

What if I'm not happy with the designs I get?

We want to make sure you’re happy with room design. If you’re not happy for any reason, please contact us. We want to make it right. 

Can I combine items from two different style boards?

Yes. Make a note of what you like/dislike on each of the style boards on phase one and let your Daakorator know once you choose a style board to move forward with. 

Will you incorporate my existing items?

Yes. We’d be happy to incorporate any items you already own into the design. 

Is a great room with living/dining considered one room or two?

We consider a combined living/dining room as two rooms. We’ll make sure the design concepts give you a look that makes it continuous when you do both room with us. We also recommend you start with the living room for these types of rooms.

How do I measure my room?

It’s important for our design pros to know what your room looks like today. We get a feel for that with the room measurements and photographs you provide to us.

How do I photograph my room?

Since we don’t come to your home to see what your room looks like, a photographs helps us see your room virtually.  We need to see the room in more than one angle. So the guide we put together tells you to take 3 photos on each wall you have in the room you want to furnish and decorate.

Do you have any tips for getting the design brief right?

Your Daakor Design Brief is what our Daakorators use as input to create your design plan. Your design brief represents you. So, it’s important to tell us everything that you think is important for us to know.

Here are some tips to get you going on the right foot.

Create Pinterest boards.

Pinterest boards help us understand what design styles you gravitate towards. We find that most people like to go by labels – mid-century modern, traditional, country, modern, etc – but the truth is we find that people often choose more than one style when there are no labels attached.

This is especially true when we are working with a couple or a family. So, we’d rather you show us what type of designs you like and base your design plan on that info.

Sure, we have a few pics that you can choose from on our design brief questionnaire but that only gives us the bare minimum on what your style could be.

Aim for a Pinterest board with about 15-20 pins of rooms you like that you could find on Pinterest, Houzz or elsewhere on the web.  It will really go far to help us understand your style.

Measure your room and show us what your room looks like.

Since we provide e-design services and our Daakorators don’t see your room in person, it’s really important that we can visualize your room so we can get the proportions right for the design plan.

Follow the instructions provided for measuring and photographing your room and upload all your info to the design brief.

Tell us what’s important and relevant to you.

It could be a bit about how you plan to use the room, or who will be using the room, and a little about your lifestyle and anything else that might be relevant to you.

For example, in a recent project we did, our client told us in passing about a celebrity designer that they really like to follow on HGTV. That really helped us better understand how to create a design plan for her that she would really love.
