Boho Design Style is an eclectic, earthy aesthetic combining styles from all over the world, that when put together, look effortlessly cool, creative and carefree. Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it?

Now, although this style tends to break the rules and allows for some serious individuality, we still want your space to look inviting, curated and well, like it belongs on a magazine cover.

That’s why this week we are going to break down the elements of Boho Design Style and outline exactly what you need to ensure your space has that perfect Bohemian feel.

Achieving a desired look doesn’t have to be super hard, you just need to know where to begin…

Boho Colour Palette

We’re going to strip this style waaay back to the start, with the base colours of course! Yep, we’re talking colour palettes.

Now again, there are no serious rules for Boho Design Style (that’s what makes it so dang cool), but there are colours you can start with that will really give that organic, laid-back feel.

Warm, earthy colours are common for this design style. Think creams, browns, dark greens, and greys. These are perfect colours for your walls, floors or large pieces of furniture.

Next, you’ll want to accessorise with fun colours, like deep jewel-tones. One of the best parts of Bohemian Design style is the array of colours you can use!

Mixing and layering colours is an essential aspect of this style, so don’t be afraid to try something new and experiment with all kinds of shades!

Materials, Textures and Patterns

Let’s discuss some of the popular products you can use to achieve this Boho Style. Like we said above, this vibe is very organic and earthy, so you’ll want to include lots of earthy textures and patterns.

A huge aspect of Boho Design is the mix of materials, textures and styles. It’s important to keep this in mind when decorating your space.

You’ll want to incorporate items of different shapes and materiality in order to create that eye-catching, yet laid back look.

We love to see the use of rattan furniture in Boho Design, especially with accent chairs, overhead lighting, or shelving. Rattan is a lightly coloured material that makes beautifully curved furniture. It instantly gives the feel of a tropical paradise.

We also love the use of solid wood for coffee tables, dressers, consoles, etc. and leather, for sofas, accent chairs and poufs. When it comes to accessories, it is important to mix up materiality.

Saying that, we love pillows and blankets with fringe, cozy upholstery, and decorative items that are woven or crocheted.

Plants, Plants, Plants

Next, you’ll need to include some plants into your design.

Adding plants to your space is the easiest way to make it feel earthy, and connected to the outdoors. We love large floor plants in the corner of a room or small plants hanging from the ceiling.

What are some good plant options for Boho design style? Monstera, Cacti, Ferns, Philodendrons, Birds of Paradise are some really great options to try.

There are tons of cool planters on the market that would look great in a Boho style room. Try finding a fun, brightly coloured planter for the floor plants and a macrame holder for the ceiling plants!

A Large Patterned Rug

A large rug, with a great pattern, is another essential for Boho Design Style. Bohemian style rugs are often made with eye-catching colours and bold, vibrant patterns.

We’ll attach some of our faves below! You can also choose two rugs and layer them in your space too. This is a really unique design hack that will give you a very cool, one-of-a-kind look!

Wall Style

Let’s talk about the walls.

Decorating the walls of your Bohemian space can be so very fun. This is your chance to really personalize your area and incorporate your favourite pieces.

Creating an eclectic look means carefully piecing together items of all shapes, colours and sizing. You want to create walls that are interesting to look at!

Think about mixing together your favourite art, a nice mirror and perhaps a wall hanging, like a tapestry or macrame piece.

You can really express your personal style with your wall decor by adding items you’ve collected from different places across the globe, items you’ve thrifted from a local store or maybe even something you’ve crafted yourself.

Boho Design style is such a popular style for interiors. It allows for self expression and there are really no strict rules. That’s what makes this style so unique and fun.

It’s important to note that you can make your space as Bohemian as you wish. If you prefer to use all neutral colours, that works just fine. OR, if you want rather plain walls with just a couple pieces of art, that works too.

Again, Bohemian style is eclectic and has to be personalised to you! Use the tips above to start visualising what your space could look like, and think about what speaks to you.

So go ahead rule breaker, what are you waiting for? Your Bohemian dream space awaits!
