Why is it that no matter how hard I try I always have a pile of clothes on the floor in my room? Why am I always tossing and turning at night, waking up agitated, when I should be well rested? AND why the heck do I always opt for watching Netflix instead of reading my book before bed?
It all comes down to one simple answer: bedroom design. Bedrooms are often overlooked when it comes to design, and for no good reason. A bedroom should be a personal sanctuary and a place you love to spend time in.
So why do so many people struggle to make their bedroom into a welcoming space that they can enjoy? There are a few easy to follow DO’s and DON’T’s when it comes to bedroom design ideas that can help everyone when giving their bedroom a little revamp.
And I mean come on, aren’t we tired of locking our bedroom door every time we have guests over like we’re hiding some deep dark secret? Let’s make our bedrooms a space to be proud of! And more importantly, a space that truly makes us happy.

DO Use the Right Colour Scheme
Paint will always be one of our favourite bedroom design ideas. Because we want our bedroom to be a restful and relaxing space, it’s best to keep to a muted colour scheme for the main walls. Now hold up, muted doesn’t have to mean boring.
Muted just means the colour is easier on the eyes and will help you to feel calm when entering this space. Right now, we really love a beautiful sage colour for bedroom walls, as it helps us to connect with nature and feel at peace within the space.
DO Provide Good Storage
Remember that pile of clothing I was talking about? The one that haunts me everyday… Easy fix! Storage. Storage. Storage. Providing good storage in a bedroom will allow you to keep the space clean and organized which in turn, helps you to feel stress free and happy.
Try incorporating things like nightstands with drawers or a custom-made wardrobe. Remember to utilize all the space you have by using roll out drawers underneath your bed or a nice bench with storage at the foot of the mattress. Phew! Now, I can finally see my floor again.

DO Use Mirrors
You’ll want a mirror in your room for two reasons. First, no one wants to leave their room a hundred times to check their outfit in a mirror when getting ready. That’s why it is an absolute must to have a mirror in your bedroom space.
Second, not only does a mirror provide ease and convenience for getting ready in the morning, but it also does an amazing job at making your bedroom appear bigger. That’s right, the addition of a mirror helps to reflect and bounce light around the room which actually makes the space feel larger!
Another great thing about mirrors– they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and styles so you can always find one to match your space and your personal style.
DO Use Curtains
Remember to incorporate curtains on your bedroom windows. Curtains can be quite a magical interior design trick. They can make your windows appear bigger, they can add colour and texture to your room, they can provide privacy, and they can control the amount of natural light coming in.
Feel free to experiment with different colours and patterns, whatever matches your unique style. And remember to hang them so that they just brush the ground, they are as close to the ceiling as possible, and they are wider than your actual window.

DON’T Buy a Rug that is Too Small
Rugs have the potential to be unifying pieces of décor that can really pull a room together. Not to mention, they feel cozy on our feet! Rugs are one of those bedroom decorating ideas that we often see homeowners skip, but that’s a big design mistake in our books.
When selecting a rug for your bedroom it is vital that the rug is the right size. A good way of doing this is by making the bed a focal point and working around that. Most times, you’ll want to make sure the rug is placed at least two thirds of the way under the bed and extends out on each side 18’’-24’’.
DON’T Ignore Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important elements in any space and is an integral part in creating a bedroom that is cozy and functional. It is essential to layer lighting based on what it is used for.
You will need general ambient lighting, like a chandelier or flush mounted light. You will need accent lighting to provide that cozy glow. Try a beautiful table lamp on your dresser!
Lastly, you will need task lighting for things like reading before bed. We love wall sconces above nightstands that are both functional and stylish.

DON’T Forget Good Quality Bedding
Last but certainly NOT least, bedding. It is SO very important to make sure you are having a restful night sleep, and the best way to do so? Good quality bedding.
A good set of sheets and a nice comforter or a duvet can be just what you need to finish up your bedroom design. Try something like Egyptian Cotton or high-quality linen.
Be sure to add a throw blanket to the end of your bed for texture and warmth and don’t forget the throw pillows. Throw pillows can really tie a room together, and they are a fun way to add your unique style to the space.
So, now that I’ve got that pile of clothing off the floor, I’ve added task lighting to my nightstands and my bed feels like a cloud, my bedroom is truly a relaxing oasis!
By following these easy bedroom decorating ideas you’ll be able to transform your bedroom into a space you actually enjoy being in! AND you might find yourself feeling the need to crack the door open a bit when you have guests over. ?.
