Create a Home That Feels Like You: The No-Stress Guide

Dec 16, 2024 | Design 101

You’ve picked the perfect sofa, added the trendy coffee table, and even layered in that Instagram-worthy rug. And yet, as you step back and take it all in, something feels… off. It’s not that the pieces aren’t beautiful—they are. But instead of feeling like you, your home feels a little like you’re living in a frumpy furniture showroom, not the luxe Veranda magazine layout you pictured in your mind.

It’s just that everything feels cold, impersonal, and, honestly, a little lifeless. Everything is perfectly placed, perfectly matched, and perfectly… boring. Sure, it looks nice, but there’s no soul to it. It kinda feels flat. Nothing about it says, “This is our home.”

Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing–a house becomes a home when it reflects your personality, your journey, and your style. But for many of us, the process of creating a home that feels like you can feel overwhelming. There’s so much to choose from, so many trends to follow, and a million tiny decisions to make. It’s easy to overthink, second-guess, and end up with a space that’s nice but not truly personalized.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way. The secret to designing a home that feels personal, inviting, and uniquely yours isn’t about getting every detail perfect, without being frumpy. It’s about focusing on what matters most: you

In this post, I’m going to share simple, stress-free design tips for creating a home that reflects your style, feels personal, and—most importantly—feels like home. All the while maintaining an elevated look and feel. Let’s dive in.

Why Personalization Matters in Home Design

Home design is not just about making a space look good. It’s about creating an environment that feels good—an environment where you can relax, connect, and truly be yourself. A personalized home design does more than make your house look like home; it turns it into a space that reflects your story, your values, and your personality.

When a space feels personal, it feels welcoming. Think about it—when you walk into a room that reflects your style and has meaningful pieces you love, doesn’t it instantly feels inviting?

It’s kinda like the difference between wearing a tailored suit versus something straight off the rack. Sure, the store-bought suit might fit okay, but it doesn’t quite feel the same as something made just for you.

Now, imagine the opposite—a room that doesn’t reflect your style at all.

A little while ago, I moved in with my Mom who has Dementia. She has always had great taste but her style is very different from mine. And with her Dementia diagnosis, it’s hard for her to handle change, which means I can’t really change too much around her home to make it work for both of us. This is probably one of the biggest challenges I deal with every day. I often find myself needing to escape to a space that feels more like me just to catch my breath.

When you’re in a space that doesn’t feel like you, it’s hard to truly relax. Something feels off, like you’re living in someone else’s home instead of your own. In my case, that’s totally true! It can be frustrating and even draining—you know the room isn’t working, but you might not even be sure how to fix it.

Instead of feeling like a place where you can recharge, it feels disconnected and uninspiring, maybe even chaotic if it doesn’t match how you like things organized. You might find yourself avoiding the room altogether because it just doesn’t feel right.

I used to be an avid baker when I lived in my own place and over the last few years I’ve avoided baking at all costs because my Mom’s kitchen doesn’t feel like me. I’m slowly getting back into baking as it brings me so much joy and even plotting how to update the kitchen to work for me and my Mom

My point is when a space reflects your personality and style, everything changes. It feels welcoming, comforting, and like it was made just for you—a place you actually want to spend time in.

Personalization is so powerful because it’s a reminder of who you are and what you love. From the colors you’re drawn to, to the textures that make you feel cozy, to the decor that tells your story—these choices create a home that feels like you. And the best part? When you design a home that reflects your style and makes your house feel personal, it becomes a place you can’t wait to come back to every day.

Take these three essential steps before you start decorating.

Stop Overthinking: Simplify Your Approach

With so many trends, Pinterest boards, and endless design inspiration, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to make everything perfect. But here’s the truth–perfection is overrated. I like to say be perfectly imperfect in your home! What actually matters is designing a home that reflects your style and feels personal to you.

The good news? You don’t have to overthink it. Start with these simple steps:

Start with What You Love

Instead of worrying about whether everything matches or fits into a specific design trend, focus on the pieces you already love. Maybe it’s a piece of art you bought on vacation, a chair passed down from your grandparents, or even the color of your favorite sweater. These personal touches are what make your house feel like home.

For example, I’ve had clients who were hesitant to use something they loved because it didn’t “fit” the look they thought they needed to create. But when we built the room around that item, it became the centerpiece, and everything else fell into place. So, trust your instincts—those pieces you love are the key to creating a home that feels personal and unique.

Define Your Style Without Labels

When it comes to defining your design style, it’s easy to feel like you need to fit into one specific category—boho, minimalist, mid-century modern, or any of the countless others. But here’s my take: your style is uniquely yours. It’s a blend of influences, preferences, and the things you’re naturally drawn to. And while it might incorporate elements of popular styles, it’s always going to have your personal twist.

That’s why we created our Design Style Quiz. It’s not about boxing you into one category or telling you to stick to a rigid set of rules. Instead, it’s designed to help you identify the top three styles that resonate with you the most. This is a starting point, a way to better understand what you’re naturally drawn to.

Once you know your top three styles, you can use them as inspiration to guide your choices and start curating a look that feels personal and cohesive. Think of it as putting together a recipe—your unique style is the perfect mix of these ingredients, combined in a way that only you could create.

By focusing on these key influences, you’ll feel more confident in your decisions and get closer to creating a home that reflects your style and feels personal, without overthinking or second-guessing every choice.

Instead of chasing a label, think about how you want your space to feel.

Ask yourself:

  • What colors and textures do I naturally gravitate toward in these styles?
  • Which spaces and styles make me feel relaxed, energized, or inspired?
  • What objects in my life hold the most meaning?

By focusing on how you want your home to feel instead of sticking to a specific aesthetic, you’ll make decisions that align with you. This approach simplifies the process and ensures your home feels personal and timeless.

Easy Ways to Infuse Personality Without Overthinking

Creating a home that feels like you doesn’t mean overhauling everything or starting from scratch. In fact, some of the most impactful changes come from adding small, meaningful touches that make your house feel personal and uniquely yours. Here are a few simple, stress-free ways to design a home that reflects your style and feels welcoming:

Showcase Your Story with Meaningful Decor

You’re going to get me tired of saying this: your home should tell your story, not someone else’s. Think about incorporating items that have a personal connection—maybe it’s a framed map of your favorite vacation spot, a collection of books you love, or a gallery wall filled with family photos and art that inspires you.

For example, one of our clients transformed a completely neutral living room simply by adding a gallery wall with photos they had taken on their travels and artwork collected over the years. Suddenly, the room went from looking generic to feeling deeply personal—like it was made just for them. Not to mention that gallery wall is a conversation starter.

Add Color Strategically

Color is a powerful way to bring personality into your home without feeling overwhelming. If you’re hesitant to commit to bold hues, start small with accents like throw pillows, rugs, or even artwork. Your favorite colors are a reflection of your style, so let them shine. Better yet, pick one thing–like a colourful throw pillow and draw colours from that to sprinkle around your room.

One tip I always share is to use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% of your room’s color comes from your main palette (like walls or large furniture), 30% from secondary accents (think curtains or rugs), and 10% from small, bold pops of color (pillows, vases, or decor). This keeps your space feeling balanced and intentional. So think about all the ways you can add your personality in that 10%! I promise you, you won’t break your beautiful design with this approach.

Invest in Statement Pieces

Sometimes, all it takes is one or two standout items to completely transform a room and make it feel uniquely yours. Think of a bold lamp that doubles as a piece of art or an armchair with a unique design that commands attention.

I once found this large ceramic, carved ginger jar on a visit to a HomeSense store. This piece became the focal point around which I decorated my bedroom. It was something that brought me immense joy every time I walked into my bedroom.

These statement pieces anchor your space and serve as conversation starters while reflecting your personal taste. The key is to choose items you adore—pieces that make you smile every time you walk into the room. By grounding your design with a few impactful pieces, you can create a room that feels intentional and distinctly your own.

Trust Your Instincts and Embrace Imperfection

Let me let you in on a little secret: the most beautiful homes are not the ones where everything is perfect. They’re the ones where every detail feels personal and real. It’s about creating a space that feels authentic and reflects your story.

When it comes to creating a home that reflects your style, trust your instincts. If you love something, it belongs in your space—whether or not it matches the latest trend or anyone else’s opinion.

I once worked with a client who was hesitant to hang a bold piece of art they had fallen in love with because they thought it might “clash” with the rest of their decor. We made some tweaks to the design of the room that would make this piece work. And when we finally hung it, the room just came to life. That one piece became the focal point that tied everything together, and it reflected their personality in a way no perfectly curated trend ever could.

Your Home, Your Rules

Creating a home that feels like you doesn’t have to be overwhelming or complicated. It’s not about perfection, following trends, or trying to fit your style into a neat little box. It’s about making thoughtful choices, trusting your instincts, and letting your personality shine through.

Start with the pieces you love and focus on creating a space that reflects your style and feels personal. Add meaningful decor, layer in textures and colors, and don’t be afraid to incorporate bold statement pieces or embrace imperfection. These small, intentional steps will help you design a home that not only looks beautiful but truly feels like you.

Your home should tell your story, make you feel comfortable, and be a place you can’t wait to come back to every day. So take a deep breath, trust the process, and have fun with it. You got this!
