Designing for Pets: Tips for a Pet-Friendly Home

Aug 18, 2023 | Design 101

If you share your home with a furry friend, you know the joy and companionship they bring to your life. Our pets are more than just animals; they’re cherished members of our families, right?

Designing a pet-friendly home is not just about making your pets feel welcome; it also benefits you as a pet owner. By creating an environment that caters to their specific requirements, you can minimize the chances of accidents, damage, and stress for both you and your beloved pets.

At Daakor, we often get requests from our clients to make special accommodations for their furry family members. Below are some of the design considerations we use when we get this specific request from our clients.

Flooring and Furniture

First we should talk about one of the most important aspects of designing a pet-friendly home: flooring and furniture considerations. We all know that our furry friends can leave their paw prints (and sometimes their accidents) throughout the house.

That’s why we’ve got some tips to help you choose the right materials and furniture that can withstand the wear and tear of our beloved pets, all the while keeping your home looking stylish and beautiful.

Flooring

First things first, let’s talk about flooring. When it comes to pets, durability is key. Look for flooring materials that can handle their energetic antics and occasional claws. Hardwood or vinyl flooring is an excellent choice because they are not only sturdy but also easy to clean.

Say goodbye to those pesky pet hairs and dirt that can accumulate with carpet on your floor. Plus, hard surfaces like hardwood or vinyl can help minimize allergens, creating a healthier environment for both you and your furry companions.

Now, you may prefer the coziness of carpet, and if that’s you, that’s okay! If you opt for carpet, consider ones that are specifically designed to be pet-friendly. Look for stain-resistant options that can withstand spills and accidents. And invest in a good vacuum cleaner!

And here’s a pro tip: consider carpet tiles. They offer flexibility and ease of maintenance. If a particular area gets heavily soiled or damaged, you can simply replace the affected tiles without the hassle of redoing the entire carpet.

Furniture

We all adore cuddling up with our pets on the couch, but let’s be honest, we know accidents happen. When it comes to choosing furniture, go for fabrics that are stain-resistant and easy to clean.

Microfiber and leather are excellent options because they can handle the occasional mess with ease. A quick wipe or a dab of a cleaning solution, and you’re good to go!

And let’s not forget about those curious cats and their claws. Opt for furniture made from scratch-resistant materials or use protective covers to keep your sofas and chairs looking their best. It’s all about finding that delicate balance between comfort and durability.

Of course, regular maintenance is essential to keeping your home looking fresh and clean. That goes without saying, right? Vacuuming regularly to banish those pet hairs, wiping down surfaces, and tackling accidents promptly will go a long way in maintaining a pet-friendly environment that you’ll be proud to show off.

Creating Safe Spaces for Pets

Our furry friends deserve designated areas where they can eat, rest, and feel secure. By providing them with these safe havens, we not only meet their physical needs but also nurture their emotional well-being.

Just like us, our pets appreciate having a designated spot to enjoy their meals. Consider setting up an elevated feeding station that is accessible to your pets. This not only provides a comfortable dining experience but also helps promote better digestion. Remember to choose non-slip bowls to prevent any accidental spills or messes.

Our pets also need a cozy place to unwind and recharge their batteries. Invest in comfortable beds or cushions where they can curl up and snooze the day away. Cats, in particular, love to have their private nooks, so consider creating quiet corners or even incorporating pet crates or enclosed spaces where they can retreat when they need some alone time.

Speaking of crates, they can be a valuable addition to your pet-friendly home. Crates provide a safe and secure space for your pets, especially when you’re away or during travel. Make sure to choose a crate that is appropriately sized for your pet, allowing them to move around comfortably. Camouflage the crate within your home decor blending it seamlessly with the overall design.

I had a custom wood cover created for my dog’s crate to make it look like a table. It easily blended in with the rest of the decor in the living room after I styled the crate and the area surrounding it.

Cats love to explore and have a knack for finding cozy hiding spots. So why not create some purposeful hiding places for them?

Designate areas with shelves, cubbies, or even cat trees (find one that is stylish – yes, they exist!) where they can climb, perch, and observe their kingdom from above.

For small pets like hamsters or rabbits, consider creating secure enclosures or habitats that provide ample space for them to play and thrive.

As a pet parent, one of my biggest concerns is potential hazards that might be around the house. For example, toxic plants or loose cords can pose a threat to curious pets. Secure electrical wires and keep household chemicals and medications out of reach.

Creating safe spaces for our pets is not only about their physical comfort but also about their safety. As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to pet-proof our homes.

Incorporating Pet-Friendly Features in Home Design

First on the list is incorporating built-in pet-friendly amenities. These features seamlessly blend into your home’s design while providing convenience for both you and your pets.

Consider installing built-in pet gates or barriers to keep your furry friends out of certain areas when necessary. This allows you to maintain boundaries without resorting to unsightly makeshift barriers. Plus, it gives you peace of mind, knowing that your pets are safe and secure.

Another fantastic addition to a pet-friendly home is an integrated pet door or access point. This allows your pets to come and go freely, whether it’s to explore the backyard or access their designated potty area.

Pet doors can be installed in exterior doors or even through walls, depending on your home’s layout. Just make sure to choose a pet door that suits the size of your pets and is weather-resistant for added convenience and protection.

Now, let’s talk about storage solutions. We all know that pets come with their fair share of supplies, from food and toys to leashes and grooming essentials. Incorporating pet-friendly storage options will help keep your home organized and clutter-free.

Designate specific areas or cabinets to store pet food, treats, and toys, ensuring easy access and keeping everything neatly tucked away. You can even opt for stylish baskets or decorative containers to add a touch of design flair to your pet storage solutions.

Now, let’s think about those litter boxes. While necessary for our feline friends, they can sometimes be an eyesore. But fear not, my friends, there is good news on this front!

There are creative ways to conceal litter boxes and make them blend seamlessly into your home decor. Consider using decorative litter box enclosures or even repurposing furniture pieces as stylish litter box covers.

With a little creativity, you can transform an ordinary item into a functional and visually pleasing element in your home.

Tips for Incorporating Your Personal Design Style and Aesthetics

Creating a space that caters to your pets’ needs doesn’t mean sacrificing your style. In fact, with a little creativity and thoughtful consideration, you can seamlessly blend pet-friendly elements into your overall design, making your home a visually appealing haven for both you and your furry companions.

We all know that pet beds and litter boxes are essential but not always the most aesthetically pleasing. The good news is, there are clever ways to hide them creatively. Consider incorporating built-in nooks or alcoves where you can place your pet’s bed, making it a cozy part of your overall design. For litter boxes, you can repurpose furniture pieces, such as cabinets or side tables, to serve as discreet enclosures.

Keeping your pet-related items organized is key to maintaining a clean and stylish home. Invest in decorative baskets or stylish bins to store toys, leashes, and other pet supplies. You can even repurpose furniture pieces, such as benches or ottomans with hidden storage compartments, to create functional and visually pleasing storage solutions.

At the end of the day, a pet-friendly home is a sanctuary where love, joy, and companionship thrive. It’s a place where wagging tails, purrs, and playful antics fill the air, reminding us of the special bond we share with our pets. So, embrace the opportunity to design a home that not only meets your pets’ needs but also reflects your own unique personality and style.
