Styling Shelves 101

Jun 21, 2022 | Styling

Are perfectly curated, insta-worthy shelves even attainable? Oh, you betcha!

We’ll tell you just how you can tackle the rather daunting task of styling your shelves like a pro.

Styling shelves is an easy and eye-catching way to elevate your home décor, but having said that, it’s not always easy to know what kind of objects to use or how to use them.

Some of us have cluttered storage areas that just look untidy and unappealing and some of us have empty shelves that look incomplete. So, how exactly do you strike the right balance?

Regardless of your shelf situation, with a few quick tips and tricks, we can help you transform your space into something that looks neat, well-curated and tailored just to your style!

To begin, let’s start with a clean slate. Empty your shelves and start from scratch. This way, you can evaluate the space and get a better visual on the direction you would like to go.

If you’re anything like me, you might come across some dust bunnies. This also makes for a good opportunity to give your shelves a quick dusting. My least favourite part!

Next, you’ll want to gather items of different shapes, size, and texture. It’s important to grab objects that you enjoy and that fit your style.

For example, if you have a modern, minimalistic style then perhaps you will stick to a neutral colour scheme, using objects with clean lines and simple textures. If you have a coastal style then maybe you have some wooden objects you would like to incorporate, or seaside mementos.

What we mean here is – find objects from around your home that match your aesthetic and make you happy! We suggest grabbing some picture frames and a few decorative objects like candles, vases, baskets, sculptures, and greenery.

Remember, variation is great! So don’t be afraid to experiment with items that appear different, or you may think that doesn’t belong.

It’s best to begin with the largest objects first. We like to start with picture frames or art as these work great as focal points and backdrops for the shelves.

Next you want to grab an object of different shape/size and use it to create a cluster with the picture frame. A cluster is just a way to layer the different objects. This really helps in making the shelf look curated and balanced.

Try placing a candle or decorative object in front of the picture in a slightly layered way. *Pro tip* It’s best to create clusters of objects in odd numbers, like 3 or 5.

Speaking of balance, it is important to achieve a nice balance with the objects on your shelf. Now, don’t fret! This doesn’t have to be perfect. You just want to use items of varying heights on both sides of the shelf to create symmetry. This is the best shelf styling trick that will ensure your shelf looks professional like nothing else!

Next up, books! Books are great pieces to add to your shelving. You can lay them flat and stack them (which helps to create different heights) or you can lean them up against each other on their side. Or better yet, try doing both!

We also suggest adding some greenery! Nothing wakes up a room and makes it feel fresh like a small touch of greenery. This is also a great way to incorporate your favourite vase or small pot.

So, we’ve got pictures and art, decorative objects, books, and greenery. What’s next? Now it’s time to make sure everything looks well put together and balanced. The best way to do this is to stand back and look at the clusters you’ve created.  This is the fun part so don’t be afraid of moving things around and trying different layouts. It always takes a few rounds of editing before everything looks picture perfect.

Styling shelves can be really exciting and unique, so we always say to have a little fun with it and be sure to make it your own!  Dust bunnies beware!
