Best Paint Colours for a Small Space

May 15, 2022 | Design 101, Small space

So, you’ve decorated your whole house and you’ve saved the hardest room for last. Yes of course, the hardest room is the smallest!

Why is it that small spaces pose such a challenge for decorating? They’re tiny right? We should be able to conquer them no problem!

So, let’s do it. Starting from the very beginning, before the furniture, lighting, and accessories, we start with the walls. You’ve probably heard an array of suggestions on which paint colour is best to enlarge a small room.

Everything from stark white to dark charcoal grey. That’s like the opposite ends of the light and dark spectrum. So, which one is it and how do we know what will look best in our space? The truth is there are no strict rules when it comes to choosing a paint colour for your tiny space.

Yes, whites and creams have the ability to reflect light, but darker colours can create depth. Both of which are great tactics in making a room appear larger. The best bet is to focus on the mood you want to create in the space and of course, stick with colours you actually enjoy.

Whether it’s a tiny office, a small powder room, or a little nursery, the paint colour you choose has the potential to create a lasting mood that can completely transform your space. So read on to see the list of some of our favourite paint colours that work well in small spaces.

A Luminescent Grey

Oh, how we love the endless shades of grey in this world. So why a gentle, luminescent shade of gray specifically? A grey with a slight luminosity to it does an amazing job at reflecting light and giving your space a larger feel.

Go for this colour if you’re looking for something neutral that will brighten your space up and give you a sophisticated feel. Check out Pearl Gray by Benjamin Moore.

An Earthy Green

We are loving light green this season for practically any room, and *bonus points* it happens to look amazing in small spaces. Bringing the colour green into your space can actually make it feel like an extension of the outdoors, which creates a calm, welcoming feeling and helps us stay connected to nature.

This would be perfect for a tiny entryway or mudroom.  We like Martini Olive by Benjamin Moore (It even sounds delicious).

A Bold Blue

Looking for something a little bolder? Try a nice dark blue shade to add depth and complexity to your space. Adding the contrast of a dark, bold colour can actually create an optical illusion that makes the room appear larger.

If you’re looking for something fun and energizing, try Hidden Sapphire by Benjamin Moore.

Something Bright

Small spaces can actually be the perfect place to make a statement with your favourite colour. Picture a huge room painted bright red, it may be a bit extreme and hard on the eyes, but in a small powder room, it’s super exciting and interesting.

Tiny rooms can be a good spot to experiment and have a little fun while not overwhelming the rest of your home. So let your hair down and paint that bathroom your favourite shade of yellow! An example of a great pop of colour would be Sunburst by Benjamin Moore.

A Warm White

Okay, you knew this was coming! And for a good reason too. White paint is a classic interior design hack that creates an illusion of a larger space. It reflects the most light and makes the walls recede.  It can brighten up a room and really open everything up in your home.

We like to stick to warmer white shades to give off that cozy, inviting feel. Check out Butter Pecan by Benjamin Moore. Okay whoever is in charge of naming paint colours is definitely trying to make us hungry!

So, wait a second…we’ve just named 5 completely different paint suggestions for your walls. Is it true? Can all these colours really work in your small space?

Well, the answer is yes! Especially if you’re on the hunt for the best paint colours for a small space. It’s all about focusing on what the space is used for and what you want the mood to feel like.

Looking for something neutral and calm? Go with a light Pearl Grey that has a slight luminosity to it. Looking to make a statement and create contrast? Don’t be afraid to pick a bold, dark blue and have a little fun.

The possibilities are endless. So, take a deep breath, relax, and conquer that tiny room!
