How to Make a Small Bedroom Feel and Look Bigger

May 15, 2021 | Bedrooms, Design 101

Bedrooms are one of the most important spaces in your home. But it’s often the last space to get designed. If you’re looking to create a serene retreat in your home, yopu’re going to love these tips.

If you have a small bedroom or even small guest room and you’re looking for ways to make this room look bigger, we have some great design tips and trick for you.

Paint the walls with a light colour.

Choose a lighter paint colour to make the room feel larger. It doesn’t have to be white though! Just any lighter shade will work as long as you have a solid colour palette you’re working with.
You can paint the ceiling the same colour, while you’re at it.  Check out the before and after above for the difference wall colour will make in a room. Yep, hard to believe but that’s the same room.

Choose a bed frame or a headboard that has a lighter feel.

Go for a basic bed frame and a headboard that feels lighter like something that is metal like the one above. This will make the room feel lighter.
You can also paint a headboard, if you’re in a really tight space. Get furniture that have legs to create airiness to the furniture as well.

Keep the nightstands simple and small.

Since you don’t have much floor space, it’s really important that you choose furniture that are in scale to the size of the room.
Keep the amount of furniture to a minimum and choose items that have a small footprint. You could try a floating nightstand like the one above if you’re really tight for space.

Use your vertical space for storage.

Use a tall wardrobe or built-in shelves that give you storage that draws the eye up. This will save you valuable floor space for other more important things. But we agree, storage is important in a small space.

Add some mirrors.

Mirrors reflect light and make the room feel bigger. Strategically place a large leaning mirror on the floor or if you can mount it on the wall, that’s even better.
Remember to check what the mirror reflects. You don’t want the mirror to draw the eye to clutter.

Use wall sconces instead of table lamps.

Remember how we said to use small nightstands above? That means you won’t have enough room to put any table lamps on them.
There are some mighty stylish wall scones and pendent lights out there that you use to add lighting and lot of personality to your room. The best part, they plug-in to an outlet just like a table lamp.

Add interests through bedding and wall art.

Just because you painted the walls all one colour doesn’t mean that you can’t make the room a little fun with colour and pattern. Use your bedding and wall art to bring personality to the room.
With a little thought and planning, you can use these tips pretty much for any space, not just to make a small bedroom look bigger.
